Popular Kikuyu gospel singer Hellen Muthoni has been criticised after making a heartfelt public appeal to her fans to help her raise funds and recover her repossessed car.

Taking to her Instagram and Facebook stories, the “Ningukuona” hitmaker shared a passionate message asking friends and well-wishers for support.

“After wide consultations, I’ve decided to share my TILL NUMBER with my friends and family to help me get my car back. I know many of us have faced similar challenges, and your support, no matter how small, will truly make a difference. Your kindness and generosity are deeply appreciated,” she wrote.

Before the appeal, Muthoni had posted a message asking for prayers from her followers, revealing that her car had been repossessed for the second time this year.

“So my car got repossessed again, this is the second time this year. Words of encouragement and advice will go a long way, thank you,” she wrote.

Days later, the singer addressed her critics in a Facebook Live video, saying she was unashamed of her situation and urging people to be open about their struggles.

“I know I have just spoken about my car and how it was repossessed. There are so many things I have lost that I have not spoken about,” she said.

“I am not worried, I am not ashamed. Most of you are going through things that you do not say. I know so many people who struggle with mental illness. I am not going to be one of them.”

Her openness drew mixed reactions online.

Some Kenyans applauded her courage, while others criticized her for asking for help.

“Bible says ask and you will be given, knock and it will be opened, seek and you will find… And that is what she has done. Wewe hata kama unalala njaa na hujaambia yeyote? I have seen no crime on this murima babe,” wrote one fan, Opere Sao.

Another user commented, “People should learn to live within their means whenever things go south,” while another added, “Some celebs can and will never call out injustice but need help from the oppressed.”

Hellen Muthoni is a celebrated gospel artist and former TV presenter, best known for her uplifting gospel songs and openness about her life struggles.

Her hit single “Ningukuona” has garnered millions of views on YouTube.

Over the years, she has also shared about overcoming trauma and family hardship following her father’s passing; experiences that have shaped both her faith and her music.
