Media personality Oga Obina, real name, Steve Thompson Magana has emerged victorious in a defamation lawsuit against Radio Africa Group and social media influencer Maureen Imbayi, alias Black Cinderella.

The Milimani Commercial Magistrates’ Court ruled in Obina’s favour, finding that the defendants had published false and damaging statements that injured his professional reputation and brand.

The court determined that the defamatory remarks had caused significant harm, awarding the popular comedian and broadcaster a total of KSh 6 million in damages.

In the ruling, magistrate Edward Too granted Obina KSh 5 million in general damages, KSh 500,000 in aggravated damages, KSh 500,000 in lieu of an apology, and KSh 1 million in exemplary damages.

Too further issued a permanent injunction prohibiting the defendants from publishing or broadcasting any similar false allegations in the future.

The case stemmed from statements made by Black Cinderella during a show on Radio Jambo hosted by Massawe Japanni. Obina argued that the remarks were defamatory and lacked credibility, insisting that they had tarnished his name and reputation in the media industry. The court agreed, noting that the statements went beyond fair comment and amounted to deliberate misinformation.

On Instagram Obinna wrote, “6 Million easy… Major so my lawyer ( Wakili Wilis Otieno @otienowill Aka PikipikiPonki) Good job. Nimepata pesa ya kumwaga foundation ya nyumba. Hii nyumba tutaijenga na pesa ya haters. So we successfully sued Masawe Japani, Black Cinderela and Radio Jambo for defamation about a year ago and today we have won.

He furthe wrote, “Black Cinderella has been making defamatory remarks about me knowing we have never met. She gets invited for an interview by MASAWE on her show that airs on RADIO JAMBO and she goes and makes the same remarks, the host and the producers never asked for evidence but decide to air the story for Views and Likes or whatever reason.”

In June, Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai landed himself in trouble after veteran media personality Fred Obachi Machoka filed a Sh60 million lawsuit against him over a defamatory social media post.

The dispute began after Alai, known for his controversial social media commentary, published a post making unsubstantiated claims about Machoka’s health status and accusing him of tribalism.

Through his lawyer Danstan Omari, Machoka responded swiftly to the allegations, dismissing them as false, defamatory, and emotionally damaging.
