Socialite-turned-TikToker Maureen Imbayi, fondly known as Black Cinderella, has spoken out after losing a Sh6 million defamation lawsuit to renowned media personality Oga Obinna.

In a TikTok post, the socialite appeared unbothered and declared that she plans to file for bankruptcy instead of attempting to pay the hefty fine.

“Why should I run? You stand, pay, and tell Your Honour this is it. I am going to claim bankruptcy. I am confirmed bankrupt, I have no property, no payslip, and have never been employed,” she remarked.

The outspoken TikToker, who has gained fame for her satirical “online court judge” persona, also admitted to engaging in immoral activities to make a living, claiming that the little she earns cannot cover the KSh 6 million.

“I don’t have any properties to sell or send him that kind of money,” she added defiantly.

In a later update, Cinderella shared a detailed letter, giving her account of the controversy.

Where did it start?

The case stemmed from an interview Cinderella did on Massawe Japanni’s Radio Jambo show in 2023, where she made defamatory remarks against Obinna.

Obinna, in turn, swiftly denied the claims, maintaining that he had never met Cinderella.

He proceeded to seek legal redress against her, Japanni, and the station for defamation of character, saying the statements severely tarnished his image and affected his career and brand.

Obinna would later share court documents online confirming that he had won the case, celebrating the verdict as justice served.

“We successfully sued Massawe Japanni, Black Cinderella, and Radio Jambo for defamation about a year ago, and today we’ve won,” he wrote. “My brand was burned, my reputation destroyed, and they never apologised. I spoke to my lawyer, and we went to court.”

According to the judgment, the court issued a permanent injunction barring the defendants from making any further or similar defamatory statements about Obinna.

They were also ordered to jointly pay Sh5 million in general damages, Sh500,000 in aggravated damages, Sh500,000 as damages in instead of an apology, and Sh100,000 in exemplary damages.
