Tributes continue to pour in across the country for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga; and this weekend, a simple yet touching moment at Nyayo National Stadium captured the nation’s heart.

Before the Police FC vs Gor Mahia clash at the newly refurbished stadium, the Kenya Police Band delivered a soulful tribute that left fans deeply moved.

Seated casually among the crowd, without the usual pomp or ceremony, the band picked up their instruments and began to play “Jamaica Farewell,” a timeless classic by Harry Belafonte and one of Raila’s favourite songs.

The melody floated across the stands, soft and familiar. Conversations quieted. Some fans hummed along; others sat still, eyes fixed on the musicians. For a few minutes, football took a backseat as the stadium united in shared remembrance of a man who had left an indelible mark on Kenya’s political and sporting life.

Raila Odinga, who passed away, was a devoted patron of Gor Mahia FC. He often attended matches and personally rewarded the team for their victories, cementing his legacy as both a statesman and a passionate supporter of local football.

As the final whistle blew, Gor Mahia triumphed with a 2–0 win; a result many fans said felt like a fitting tribute to their beloved patron.
