Former NBA guard Patrick Beverley was arrested early Friday in Fort Bend County, Texas, on a felony charge of assault involving violence allegations.
According to ESPN, authorities said the 37-year-old was taken into custody at a residence in Rosharon at around midnight and later released after posting a Sh5.1 million ($40,000) bond.
In a social-media post, Beverley shortly after asked people, “Don’t believe everything you see on the internet,” sharing an unsigned statement indicating the incident stemmed from discovering his minor sister in an unexpected situation with an 18-year-old man.
The statement added, “He was understandably concerned, as any brother would be about his sister. However, we don’t believe what followed happened the way it’s been described, and we look forward to the opportunity to address that in court.

His legal team, however, has emphasised that Beverley has no prior criminal record.
The charge, “assault of a family member by impeding breath circulation”, is a third-degree felony in Texas.
Under state law, the allegation is treated with heightened seriousness because it involves a claim of restricting another person’s breathing, an offence that can carry a prison sentence ranging from two to ten years if proven.
Officials have not released further details on the alleged victim, any injuries, or the circumstances preceding the incident.
The arrest marks a dramatic off-court turn for the veteran guard, long known for his hard-nosed, confrontational style of play.
Beverley last appeared in the NBA during the 2023-24 season with the Milwaukee Bucks, and over a 12-year career also played for the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Chicago Bulls, Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers.
His defensive tenacity earned him three All-Defensive Team selections and a reputation as one of the league’s most intense competitors.
