Kenyans searched most for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, middle-distance runner Faith Kipyegon, and the term “Enigma” in 2025, according to Google’s annual insights.
The late Odinga’s passing on October 15 dominated search traffic, with Kenyans following updates on his funeral at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo, Siaya County, and ceremonies honouring his legacy.
Other Odinga family members, Winnie, Oburu, Ruth, and Rosemary, also trended as the nation tracked their public appearances.
Sports figures, particularly Faith Kipyegon, led athletic searches, celebrating her world-champion performances and record-breaking races. Football fans focused on international stars like Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, showing Kenya’s growing interest in global football.
Online slang and trending terms captured significant attention. Words like “Enigma,” “Jowi,” and “Conclave” were widely searched, alongside other popular terms including “demure,” “Kubant,” “Habemus Papam,” “Wantam,” “Ayurvedic,” “Saba Saba,” and “blood moon.”
Technology and digital tools also featured prominently. Searches for AI tools, virtual assistance, data analysis, digital marketing, and cybersecurity surged by over 400% compared to 2024.
Kenyans increasingly explored online monetisation, remote work, digital entrepreneurship, and digital financial services such as PayPal, reflecting a shift from cash-based to digital solutions.
In international news, Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni drew attention in November over controversial claims regarding the Indian Ocean, sparking debates across social media.
Music and entertainment remained key interests.
Top music searches included Harry Belafonte’s “Jamaica Farewell,” Nathaniel Bassey’s “Adonai,” and Mbosso’s “Pawa,” alongside tracks by Iyanni, Toxic Lyrikali, Kodongklan, Coster, Okello Max, Bien, and Chella.
On film and television, Kenyan audiences searched for Supacell, Damsel, and Shogun, often seeking episode guides, reviews, and cast information following viral clips online.
