Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has sparked fresh debate after urging Kenyan parents to intervene before the current generation of young men completely rejects marriage.
Speaking at the close of the Reformed Church of East Africa (R.C.E.A) Women League Annual Convention in Kitengela, Murkomen warned that an increasing number of young men are openly shying away from settling down, a trend he says threatens the family unit.
“Hawa watoto wetu tusipochunga watakataa kuoa,” Murkomen said. “Ata kama ni kuwapangia itabidi tuwapangie, siku hizi hawataki kuoa.”
His comments come amid nationwide discussions around modern masculinity, responsibility, and long-term commitment.
Murkomen expressed concern that many young men prefer a carefree lifestyle and are unwilling to take on the responsibilities that come with marriage and family life.
He urged parents to guide their children in choosing partners wisely and planning for the future.
Online, Kenyans did not hold back on the subject.
“Murkomen wants parents to start arranging marriages for Gen Z? This man has officially run out of security projects. CS should focus on looking into security, not matchmaking apps. And truth be told, Gen Zs aren’t avoiding marriage; they’re just avoiding becoming broke. Fix the economy first, then weddings will arrange themselves. Until then, even the dowry is doing a cost-of-living adjustment,” one Zainul Bhalloo wrote on Facebook.
Murkomen’s remarks echo recent statements by President William Ruto, who, while attending Allan Chesang’s wedding, criticised the growing trend of young people avoiding marriage.
Ruto emphasised that the family remains the foundation of Kenya’s social fabric and urged young people not to glorify irresponsibility.
He also lamented the rise of shallow modern relationships that lack depth, direction, and commitment, reminding the youth that true love requires accountability and a long-term vision.
