Hollywood has been shaken by the shocking deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, 68.
The couple were found dead in their Brentwood, Los Angeles home on Sunday afternoon in what law enforcement officials are treating as an apparent double homicide.
Authorities were called to the residence at around 3:30 p.m. on December 14 after the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to reports of a medical emergency.
First responders discovered the bodies of a man and a woman, later confirmed as Rob and Michele; both suffering from injuries consistent with knife wounds.
According to multiple sources close to the family, the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, is being questioned by police as a person of interest in connection with the deaths, though no arrests have been announced and official confirmation from law enforcement has not yet been released.
The couple’s daughter, Romy Reiner, reportedly discovered the bodies inside the home, adding an unfathomable layer of tragedy to the incident.
In a family statement shared Sunday evening, a spokesperson expressed profound grief, saying, “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
But it was behind the camera where Reiner cemented his legacy. Over more than four decades, he directed an extraordinary string of films that combined humor, nostalgia and emotional depth — many of which have become modern classics.
Reiner also co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment, producing influential series and films including Seinfeld and The Shawshank Redemption.
Beyond filmmaking, Reiner was known for his political outspokenness and advocacy on issues ranging from civil rights to public health, often leveraging his celebrity to support social causes.
Michele Singer Reiner, a celebrated photographer, had a distinguished career that included remarkable cultural moments — including an iconic portrait featured in a major book cover.
The couple had been married since 1989 and shared three children: Jake, Nick and Romy, in addition to Reiner’s daughter Tracy from his previous marriage to actress-director Penny Marshall.
Expressions of grief and remembrance have poured in from the entertainment community and beyond.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called Reiner’s contributions “a devastating loss for our city and our country,” highlighting his cultural influence and advocacy work.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division continues its investigation into the killings.
Officials have yet to release a definitive cause of death or formally name any suspects, underscoring that the facts remain under active scrutiny.
