The national government has officially kicked off the redevelopment of Moi Stadium in Kisumu, setting the stage for a modern 10,000-seat facility designed to nurture youth talent, create employment and elevate the city’s profile as a regional sports tourism destination.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Wednesday, was presided by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya

Tuya said the project reflects the government’s broader agenda to upgrade sports infrastructure as a driver of youth empowerment and economic development.

She said upon completion, the stadium will feature fully roofed pavilions on all four sides, a football pitch meeting FIFA and CAF specifications, and an eight-lane tartan athletics track compliant with World Athletics standards.

The facility will also be equipped with modern mechanical, electrical and civil installations, perimeter fencing and sufficient parking space.

CS Tuya said the upgraded stadium will play a critical role in identifying and developing young sporting talent, while offering athletes a platform to compete at national, regional and international levels.

“Beyond athletics, this project will open up job opportunities, stimulate local businesses and strengthen community cohesion,” she noted.

She further commended the Ministry of Defence for spearheading the construction works, saying its involvement would ensure quality and timely delivery.

Tuya also acknowledged the partnership with the Kisumu County Government in implementing the project.

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o described the redevelopment as a landmark moment for the county, noting that it goes beyond bricks and mortar to signal a wider economic and cultural shift.

“For decades, Moi Stadium has been a breeding ground for talent and ambition. Today, we are laying the foundation for an even bigger dream,” the governor said, recalling the facility’s contribution to the rise of football icons such as former Gor Mahia striker Peter Dawo.

Nyong’o disclosed that the stadium upgrade forms part of a long-term plan to build a sports-driven economic hub around the facility.

The broader vision includes commercial spaces such as a shopping mall and restaurants, cultural amenities like amphitheatres and art galleries, a sports museum and residential units for athletes.

He added that the project is the result of sustained international engagements aimed at mobilizing resources for grassroots infrastructure, noting that devolved governments are increasingly shaping development across the African continent.

The governor also expressed appreciation to President William Ruto for prioritizing investment in sports infrastructure and supporting Kisumu’s rising continental stature.

He cited Kenya’s growing diplomatic influence, including Nairobi’s hosting of the regional office of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLGA).

Both national and county leaders called for unity among stakeholders to ensure the project is completed on schedule and delivers long-term benefits for generations to come.
