Student caught cheating confronts lecturer, demands ‘mwakenya’ back

A viral video has shown the moment a student confronted a female lecturer after she was allegedly caught cheating during an examination.

The video, seen by TNX Africa, captures the visibly distraught student attempting to forcefully grab an examination booklet from the lecturer.

Each time the student reached for the booklet, the lecturer tightened her grip, preventing her from taking it.

The lecturer was holding the exam booklet together with small handwritten hidden notes, commonly referred to as “Mwakenya.”

Appearing calm and even smiling despite the confrontation, the lecturer questioned the student’s conduct and accused her of being disrespectful.

She then ordered the student to leave the examination room and called for security after the student made one final attempt to seize the booklet.

“Si uko na nguvu? Huna heshima kwa mimi na rika yangu. Huna heshima kwa nini? Can you go away? Ita security haraka haraka,” the lecturer said.

Another woman, believed to be a staff member, was later heard addressing the student outside the exam room, questioning her behaviour.

“Msichana ningependa kuongea na wewe, mbona unabishana na mama? Hii ndio evidence na tumekuambia ungoje exam iishe,” a voice is heard saying in the background.

The incident is alleged to have taken place at Bomet University College, a constituent college of Moi University that offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Bomet County and is seeking full university charter status, according to its website.

The video sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans on social media.

While some users condemned the student’s actions as disrespectful and deserving of disciplinary action, others questioned the institution’s infrastructure, noting that the lecture hall appeared unfinished and lacked windows.

X user Mwalimu Njuguna wrote, “The student is out of order and should be subsequently reprimanded or suspended. However, if that is a university hall in Bomet, high schools zinakaaje?”

Another user, Sky Vector, commented, “Is that building an actual university building? This one will be expelled. I’d have followed the lecturer afterwards to apologise and negotiate for an F and a resit.”

Limo Nick added, “You can actually hear the lecturer regretting why the student did not wait to be talked to by her, I guess she might have forgiven her.”
