Nairobi’s matatu culture has once again demonstrated its deep connection to global pop culture. George Ruto’s iconic ‘Mood’ matatu has unveiled a striking new graffiti artwork featuring American streaming sensation IShowSpeed alongside football legend Cristiano Ronaldo.
The eye-catching artwork comes just ahead of IShowSpeed’s highly anticipated visit to Kenya, further cementing Nairobi’s reputation as a city where street culture meets global influence.
Born Darren Jason Watkins Jr., IShowSpeed has built a massive international following through his high-energy livestreams as he travels across different countries.
The 20-year-old content creator, known for his animated personality and unwavering devotion to Cristiano Ronaldo, is currently on an ambitious African tour that has already taken him through Angola, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, Zambia, Botswana, Mozambique, and South Africa, with Kenya next on his bucket list.
Speed launched the continent-wide livestreaming tour to spotlight Africa’s rich culture, exceptional talent, and breathtaking landscapes. Reflecting on the experience, he openly expressed his admiration for the continent.
“I love Africa, I really do. I’m quite mad that I didn’t come here sooner. My dopamine is on a high. I’ve met Ronaldo and done a lot of cool things in my life, but this is refreshing to me. It’s such a new experience. This trip has really opened my eyes,” he said.
During the festive season, the YouTuber spent time in South Africa, livestreaming from Cape Town and Johannesburg. Millions of viewers tuned in as he explored the cities, rang in the New Year, and interacted with locals in real time.
Some of his streams lasted over eight hours and quickly amassed millions of views, transforming everyday moments into global conversations.
When Speed finally touches down in Kenya, he will encounter a city that mirrors his vibrant energy from the bustling streets of the CBD to the bold artistic expression found on matatus. With its exceptional talent, rich culture, and renowned cuisine, Nairobi is ready for its close-up.
Speaking to a local outlet, Ezekiel Muthee, a SACCO official operating along the Embakasi route, revealed that’ Mood’ will ferry IShowSpeed during his tour.
“We are finalising preparations and working on the logistics, but more will be shared as time goes by. Mood deserves the honour, given its game-changing features and the impact it has had on the industry. This is our opportunity to take not only Mood but also the matatu culture international.”
