Fuel tanker explodes into flames on Southern Bypass /SCREENGRAB

Police and emergency service teams have been deployed along the Southern Bypass in Nairobi after a fuel tanker caught fire following a road accident.

The road has been temporarily closed.

Police closed the busy Southern bypass to manage the fire that billowed to the sky and threatened the nearby structures.

The incident happened under a bridge on the road after an accident.

Witnesses said some road users, including bodaboda riders, had rushed to the scene to scoop the fuel that had spilt after the accident.

Nairobi police boss George Seda said they had mobilised more responders to the scene to manage the issue.

Details of the accident were scanty.

He said they will know more after the fire is contained amid fears it will spread to the nearby structures.

In a tweet on X, the Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident.

“A road traffic incident involving a lorry and a fuel tanker, which led to an explosion, has been reported near Ram Residency along the Southern Bypass,” Kenya Red Cross said.

“The highway has been temporarily closed. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.”
