Former United States First Lady Jill Biden’s former husband, William Stevenson, has been charged with the murder of his current wife, Linda Stevenson.
Reports from the BBC indicate that authorities filed the charge after carrying out investigations into the circumstances surrounding Linda Stevenson’s death.
William Stevenson, who is 77 years old, is facing first-degree murder charges related to the death of his 64-year-old wife, Linda.
Police from New Castle County in Delaware confirmed the charges noting that the case followed several weeks of investigation by law enforcement officers.
Officials also confirmed that Stevenson is currently being held at a detention facility in Wilmington, Delaware. Police said he remains in custody after failing to post bail set at Sh65 million ( $500,000). Authorities indicated that he will remain detained while the legal process continues.
The incident that led to the investigation dates back to 28 December 2025.
On that day, police responded to a call reporting a domestic dispute at the Stevensons’ home. According to earlier statements from officials, officers arrived at the residence and found Linda Stevenson unresponsive in the living room.
Emergency responders attempted to revive her using life-saving measures, but those efforts were unsuccessful. Authorities later stated that an autopsy would be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.
The BBC reported that both former First Lady Jill Biden and former President Joe Biden were contacted for comment regarding the case. At the time of reporting, no public responses had been shared.
Jill Biden was previously married to Stevenson, who was once a college football player. Their marriage lasted from 1970 to 1975. The two got married when Jill Biden was 18 years old, while Stevenson was 23 at the time.
Stevenson is known in business circles and is the owner of the Stone Balloon, a college bar located near the University of Delaware. The establishment has been associated with the local college community for years.
After her divorce from Stevenson, Jill Biden later met Joe Biden in March 1975. The two eventually got married in 1977, several years after her first marriage ended.
According to an obituary released following Linda Stevenson’s death, she is survived by members of her close family, including her daughter, granddaughter, and sister. The obituary highlighted her strong commitment to family and the importance she placed on spending quality time with loved ones.
“Linda was deeply family-oriented and treasured time spent making memories, especially on family vacations with her daughter and granddaughter,” the obituary said.
The case remains under legal review as authorities continue with court proceedings and investigations connected to the charge against Stevenson.
