President William Ruto has committed Sh2 million in support of viral boxing rivals Majembe and Mbavu the Destroyer ahead of their highly publicised fight set for April 4, 2026, in Nairobi.
The pledge followed a briefing by Lang’ata MP Phelix “Jalang’o” Odiwuor, who updated the President on the rapidly growing hype surrounding the bout, which has dominated social media after weeks of taunts, online exchanges, and viral clips.
Amused by the buzz, Ruto encouraged the fighters to go all out, confirming he would personally back them financially.
“This Majembe and Mbavu the Destroyer, I wish them well. Let them do their thing. I will place one million for Majembe and one million for Mbavu,” Ruto said.

The President also pledged to purchase 2,000 match tickets, 1,000 for each fighter’s supporters, effectively guaranteeing a packed venue.
Ruto was further drawn into the viral slang surrounding the fight, including Mbavu’s popular chant “weka mawe”, which has become a catchphrase among fans and content creators.
The bout, organised by comedian and content creator Oga Obinna, has evolved from online bravado into one of the country’s most anticipated grassroots sporting events, framed as a clash of styles, with Majembe’s technical finesse versus Mbavu’s raw power.
Support for the fight continues to grow. A local businessman has pledged an additional Sh200,000 to boost the prize pool, while several public figures and creatives have publicly picked sides. Nairobi officials have also hinted at offering training and logistical support.
Reacting to the President’s backing, Majembe thanked Ruto, describing the gesture as a morale boost and recognition for young athletes rising from unconventional platforms.
“I thank you for the support you have shown. God bless you,” Majembe said in a video message.
Majembe rose to prominence as a viral TikTok sensation, later opening up about once being paid just Sh1,600 for a professional fight despite his efforts.
Mbavu the Destroyer, popularly known as “Weka Mawe,” is the powerhouse of the duo from Dandora, Nairobi, known for his intimidating presence and aggressive street-fighting style, which sharply contrasts Majembe’s technical approach.
