A cloud of grief hangs over the Kenyan diaspora in the United Kingdom after a Kenyan woman who had been reported missing for over a month was found dead in a river.

Edna Mmbali Ombakho, a 31-year-old Kenyan Master’s student, was discovered dead on yesterday, in a river near Wraysbury in the United Kingdom, bringing a tragic end to weeks of frantic searching and prayers for her safe return.

Edna, who was pursuing her postgraduate studies at York St John University, had been missing since February 1, 2026, after reportedly leaving her residence in Wraysbury for a walk and never returning.

According to reports shared by Kenya Diaspora Media and statements attributed to Thames Valley Police, her body was later recovered from a nearby river, although authorities have not yet released full details surrounding the circumstances of her death.

The news has left her family, friends and members of the Kenyan community in the UK devastated after weeks of holding onto hope that she would be found alive.

During the search, the Kenyan diaspora had organised prayers and appeals for information about her whereabouts.

What was initially meant to be a hopeful prayer session organised by the River of Christian Fellowship together with the Kenyan Communities Chairpersons Council UK turned into a sombre gathering after the confirmation of her death.

The virtual meeting, which had been planned as a prayer vigil for her safe return, instead became a moment of collective mourning as members of the community shared tributes and prayers for her grieving family.

Friends described Edna as a soft-spoken and ambitious young woman with big dreams for her future. Authorities had earlier issued a description of the missing student, noting that she stood about 5ft 5in tall with a slender build and braided hair.

At the time she disappeared, she was wearing glasses, knee-high boots and a khaki long coat with a fur-lined hood.

Reports indicate that Edna had been living in Wraysbury with her boyfriend since December 2025.

News of her death quickly spread across social media platforms, with Kenyans expressing shock, sadness and condolences to her loved ones.

One user identified as Mc Leinn wrote on X: “Rest well Edna. May her family be filled with God’s strength during this difficult time.”

Another user, Patricia Gitonga, added: “Condolences to the family. Sad to lose a young promising life.”
