Former Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat has been laid to rest in his home country of Turkey following his sudden death that shocked the football fraternity in Kenya and beyond.

The experienced tactician was buried, in the Kemer District of Antalya Province after a funeral conducted in accordance with Islamic traditions.

Family members, friends and close associates gathered for Janazah prayers, which were held after the Dhuhr (midday) prayer before the burial.

Firat’s sudden passing sent waves of grief across the football world, particularly among Kenyan fans and players who had come to respect his contribution to the national team.

Reports indicate that the veteran coach collapsed at an airport on Sunday after suffering what is believed to have been a heart attack. People nearby reportedly rushed to assist him and attempted to provide emergency help, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

During his tenure as head coach of Kenya national football team, Firat was widely credited with bringing discipline and tactical structure to the side.

Observers often noted that the team became more organized and tactically aware on the pitch under his leadership.

His approach focused heavily on teamwork, discipline and professionalism—qualities that helped improve the team’s overall competitiveness.

Firat also worked closely with locally based players, encouraging them to believe in their abilities and to raise their performance levels.

Throughout his time in charge, the Turkish tactician maintained a strong working relationship with officials at Football Kenya Federation as part of efforts to strengthen the national team’s structure and improve performance standards.

He frequently emphasized the importance of developing local talent and building a cohesive squad capable of competing internationally.

His dedication to nurturing Kenyan players earned him admiration across the football community, with many praising his commitment to improving the national team setup.

Following news of his death, tributes quickly poured in from players, football officials and fans both in Kenya and abroad.

Many described him as a passionate and committed coach who genuinely believed in the potential of Kenyan football.

Several former players also remembered him as a mentor who pushed them to work harder and maintain professionalism on and off the field.

Though his time with Harambee Stars was relatively brief, Firat leaves behind a legacy defined by his determination to strengthen the national team and elevate standards within Kenyan football.

For many in the football fraternity, the Turkish coach will be remembered not only for his tactical guidance but also for his unwavering belief that Kenyan players could succeed on the international stage.
