Hip-hop legend Dr. Dre has officially joined the prestigious Forbes Billionaires List for 2026, cementing his place among the world’s wealthiest entertainers.

Born Andre Romell Young, the iconic producer and entrepreneur now has an estimated net worth of $1 billion (about Sh130 billion), placing him at number 3,332 globally. According to Forbes, he now shares the billionaire milestone with global superstar Beyoncé.

Dr. Dre built his fortune not only through music but also through savvy business investments and tech ventures.

His record label Aftermath Entertainment, launched under Interscope Records alongside music executive Jimmy Iovine, played a major role in shaping modern hip-hop. The label introduced global rap stars including Eminem and 50 Cent, generating massive royalties over the years.

However, one of Dre’s biggest financial wins came from the tech world.

In 2006, he co-founded Beats Electronics, a brand that revolutionised the headphone market with its stylish design, celebrity endorsements and premium sound.

The company’s success attracted the attention of Apple, which acquired Beats in a blockbuster $3 billion (about Sh390 billion) deal. The sale reportedly earned Dre around $500 million (about Sh65 billion).

Dre’s wealth grew even further in 2023 when he sold parts of his music catalogue; including solo albums, N.W.A royalties and producer credits — to Shamrock Holdings and Universal Music Group for about $250 million (Sh32.5 billion).

According to reports, his continued investments in real estate and the rising value of Apple stock further boosted his fortune.

With the milestone, Dr. Dre becomes the second rapper to reach billionaire status after Jay-Z. He also joins an exclusive group of billionaire musicians that includes Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, and Beyoncé.

Forbes compiles its annual billionaire list through extensive investigative research, valuing individuals’ net worth based on public, private, and personal assets as of a specific date (e.g., March 1). Forbes reporters review SEC filings, court records, and property records, and interview employees, rivals, and analysts to calculate the value of stocks, real estate, art, and yachts
