Universal Music Group’s regional division in East Africa has signed Nairobi-based singer Juanita Tunu, adding a new voice to its growing roster of emerging African artists.
The deal with Universal Music Group East Africa marks a significant step for the young musician, whose sound blends contemporary Afro-pop with subtle rock influences and lyrics delivered in both English and Swahili.
Before landing the record deal, Juanita developed her craft through the YouTube Artist Development Programme run by Sol Generation Records, a Kenyan label known for nurturing new talent. The programme helped her refine her songwriting and begin building an audience online.
Executives at the label say she stood out for her distinctive voice and songwriting style. Chinasa Udeala, managing director of Universal Music Group East Africa, described her as part of a new wave of Kenyan artists shaping the future of African pop.
“Juanita is an exciting new voice with real star potential—distinctive, compelling, and culturally grounded,” said Chinasa.
“She represents the next generation of Kenyan artists shaping the future of African pop, and we’re proud to welcome her to UMG East Africa as we work together to take her music to the world,” he adds.
For Juanita, the signing represents a new phase in a career that has been steadily gaining momentum.
“I’m grateful for every step that brought me here—from building through Sol Generation’s programme to now signing with UMG East Africa,” she said, adding that she hopes the partnership will help her reach wider audiences.
Juanita is currently working on new music expected to be released under the label as she prepares for what could be a breakthrough year in the regional music scene.
