The 98th Academy Awards took place on March 16 at the Dolby Theatre, bringing together some of cinema’s most celebrated figures.
The evening was dominated by One Battle After Another, which walked away with six Oscars, making it the most awarded project of the night.
Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for her role in Hamnet, while Michael B. Jordan claimed Best Actor for Sinners, becoming only the sixth Black man to win the Oscar in a leading role and joining an elite group that includes Denzel Washington, Halle Berry and Sidney Poitier.
The wins marked career-defining moments for both performers, earning them the industry’s highest recognition.
Amy Madigan took Best Supporting Actress for Weapons, while Sean Penn won Best Supporting Actor for One Battle After Another. Paul Thomas Anderson was named Best Director and also won Best Adapted Screenplay for One Battle After Another, cementing the film’s dominance at the ceremony.
The film also secured Best Film Editing, while Sinners added Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography to its tally. K-pop Demon Hunters was awarded Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, Sentimental Value took Best International Feature, and Mr. Nobody Against Putin won Best Documentary Feature.
F1 earned Best Sound, Avatar: Fire and Ash won Best Visual Effects, and Frankenstein was recognised for Best Production Design.
The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, were first held in 1929 and are presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour excellence in cinematic achievements.
They are widely considered the most prestigious awards in the film industry and have become a global benchmark for artistic and technical achievement in filmmaking.
Over the years, the ceremony has grown from a private banquet with a few hundred attendees to a star-studded televised event watched by millions around the world.
Beyond celebrating artistic talent, the Oscars often reflect wider cultural conversations, making each ceremony a snapshot of the film industry and society at large in that year.
