First Oscar win for Michael B. Jordan as ‘Sinners’ star claims best actor

Michael B. Jordan has etched his name into Oscar history, marking a defining moment in a career that has steadily risen over more than a decade.

The 39-year-old clinched his first Academy Award for Best Actor, capping a long-standing creative partnership with filmmaker Ryan Coogler that has produced some of Hollywood’s most impactful films.

The win came for his performance in Sinners, a vampire horror film in which Jordan took on the demanding dual role of twin brothers Smoke and Stack.

The story follows the pair as they return to Mississippi after working under gangster Al Capone in Chicago, hoping to start afresh by opening a juke joint, only to encounter a sinister force.

Sinners emerged as a major awards contender, earning 16 Academy Award nominations. Jordan’s Best Actor nod was his first, making the eventual win even more significant. He beat strong competition from Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio, appearing visibly stunned as he accepted the award.

His victory also places him among a select group, becoming the seventh Black actor to win Best Actor.

In an emotional speech, Jordan paid tribute to those who paved the way, saying, “I stand here because of the people who came before me,” as he referenced icons like Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, and Will Smith.

Jordan’s journey to this milestone spans more than two decades. He began acting at 15, gaining early recognition as Wallace in the critically acclaimed series The Wire. He later appeared in All My Children and Friday Night Lights, steadily building his craft.

A turning point came in 2013 when he first teamed up with Coogler on Fruitvale Station, portraying Oscar Grant, a role that drew widespread critical acclaim and comparisons to a young Denzel Washington.

The pair reunited for Creed, a continuation of the Rocky franchise, where Jordan starred opposite Sylvester Stallone as Adonis Creed. He went on to reprise the role in subsequent sequels, including Creed III, which also marked his directorial debut.

In 2018, Jordan delivered another standout performance as Erik Killmonger in Black Panther, widely regarded as one of the most compelling antagonists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Following his Oscar win, tributes poured in from across sectors, including from his football club, AFC Bournemouth.

“Congratulations to Michael B. Jordan on winning Best Actor at the Oscars last night,” the club posted. “A proud day for the Cherries family.”

Jordan has also made history off the field, becoming the first Premier League club owner to win an Academy Award.
