Brian Okello, who went viral after being attacked while helping a woman during a fare dispute with a boda boda rider, has received support from well-wishers who have since been showering him with gifts.
Okello was gifted a brand new pair of shoes by a women-owned shop, with many praising his bravery online.
Content creator 2mbili has also linked up with Okello, also known as “Mr Superman,” and shared his contact details, calling on Kenyans to support him with lunch and other help.
Initially, many Kenyans mocked him, questioning why he intervened on behalf of someone who had refused to pay.
Okello explained that the incident began after the woman’s phone died and she asked for a few minutes to go into her apartment, charge it, and complete the payment. The rider reportedly refused, sparking a confrontation.
According to Okello, the woman, wearing a hanging black jacket and blue shorts, picked up a brick from a nearby grassy area and threw it at the rider, escalating the fight.
He said he stepped in to defend her but was attacked by other boda boda riders, drawing mixed reactions online.
Okello recalled, “I was on my way running errands when I saw a crowd. Reaching the scene, I found this boda boda rider assaulting the woman over a fare dispute. I tried to intervene, but they turned against me.”
Despite the backlash and assault, he maintained he has no regrets.
“I would still step in to help again if faced with a similar situation,” he said.
Bystanders who tried to intervene stepped back as the rider grabbed the woman by the hair and attacked her, leaving onlookers in shock.
Online reactions were divided. John Okumu wrote, “The man in a red sweater was in a hurry to help the lady but found it rough.”
Alphonce Anaswa said, “The man in red must be honoured. Whatever the case, a man shouldn’t fight a woman.” Kevin Odhiambo added, “Team red cross.”
