How personal stylist Mwende Faith is using fashion to boost youth confidence, employability

In our today life, first impressions can determine access to opportunity, fashion is increasingly being recognised as more than aesthetic.

Mwende Faith, a personal stylist and founder of the Academy of Style, is positioning style as a vehicle for confidence, self-expression, and employability, particularly for young people navigating the job market.

“My work sits at the intersection of communications, personal style and social impact,” she says.

“Through my academy and with initiatives such as Kinara Styling Program, I help people visually align who they are with how they show up in the world. It’s about confidence, opportunity, and economic empowerment, not just clothes.”

The styling initiative was launched in collaboration with Delight Technical College, The Piano House, and other partners, targeting young people who cannot afford professional attire.

But Mwende says the programme is about more than handing out clothing. “Giving someone clothes without helping them understand how to use them does not create lasting impact,” she says. “We teach participants to make intentional choices about how they show up.”

The programme sources clothing through a decluttering system where individuals donate unused garments. Mwende describes it as a circular, community-driven approach.

“Many people have high-quality clothing that is simply underutilised. When we align wardrobes intentionally, what is released becomes a resource rather than waste. Combined with education and guidance, this model supports personal and professional growth, while remaining environmentally responsible.”

Yet she is careful to differentiate style from superficiality. “We are not overestimating appearance,” she insists.

“Skills, education and networks remain critical. But research shows first impressions are formed within seconds, often before a single word is spoken. Styling helps young people close the gap between how they feel internally and how they show up externally. It’s a tool, not a replacement for substance.”

She also draws a clear line between empowerment and pressure to conform.

“If styling becomes about forcing someone into a mould, it stops being personal and becomes pressure,” she says.

The Academy of Style was born from recognising that personal styling is often perceived as a luxury, inaccessible to those who need it most.

“We realised the deeper issue was not lack of clothing, but uncertainty and identity,” she says.

“Many young people have clothes but lack confidence or guidance on how to present themselves. Her styling programe addresses professional readiness and image literacy, equipping participants with practical skills to navigate life transitions.”

Sustainability and community impact remain central to her approach. “Most donation models are transactional. We disrupt that by integrating education, guidance, and intentional curation. Participants actively engage with stylists, make choices, and build awareness. The goal is confidence built, identity clarified, and readiness strengthened.”

Mwende also curates Awe & Art, an immersive event for Gen Z audiences that blends creativity and expression through painting experiences.

“On the surface, the audiences appear different, but the core need is the same,” she says. “Young people are navigating identity. Awe & Art leans into expression, while Academy of Style focuses on application. Both connect identity to purpose.”

“We are not repackaging Western standards,” she says. “Professional image should reflect culture, environment, and individuality. Our work equips individuals to read expectations while expressing themselves authentically. It’s strategic adaptation, not imitation.”

For Mwende Faith, style is a tool to navigate opportunity, build confidence, and assert identity in spaces where young people might otherwise feel invisible.
