PHOTOS: Nelson Havi Hints at Sh48m Mercedes-Maybach birthday gift

City lawyer and former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi has gotten netizens talking after he hinted at acquiring an expensive toy for his birthday.

In a post shared on social media platforms, Havi shared a photo of a Mercedes-Benz Maybach S580, a machine often associated with infinite wealth.

“Do not wait to be gifted on your birthday. Just go and get yourself a befitting gift for a hardworking 48-year-old from the manufacturer,” he wrote on X.

The photo captured the car in what appeared to be a dealership, finished in a signature high-gloss deep black that highlights the Maybach’s imposing silhouette.

The front is dominated by the exclusive Maybach grille with its thin vertical chrome struts and a distinctive chrome “fin” running down the centre of the hood.

Standard for this ultra-luxury tier are the massive 20-inch monoblock forged wheels, solid, plate-like rims that have become a hallmark of the Maybach brand, giving the car a grounded, regal presence.

The Maybach S580 is more than just a car; it is a masterpiece of engineering designed to prioritise the passenger experience above all else.

Under the hood, it is powered by a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, delivering a smooth yet potent 496 horsepower.

This allows the massive sedan to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds, powered by a smooth, seamless 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission.

“It gets a 7.1-inch stretch between the wheels compared to the regular S-Class, with a long rear door and peekaboo opera windows in the pillars. With a chrome rib running down the centre of the hood, a standard set of 20-inch monoblock forged wheels, and one of the most gorgeous paint finishes I’ve ever seen, the elongated S580 exudes attention to detail,” writes Brett Evans of Motor1.

Inside, the cabin is a sanctuary of Nappa leather and high-tech displays, including a 12.8-inch OLED central touchscreen and a Burmester 4D surround sound system.

“No one could possibly complain about how comfortably and quietly this Mercedes-Maybach S580 goes about its business, but yet again, you’ve got to pay for the privilege,” Evans adds.

While the standard Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223) is already considered a gold standard for executive luxury, the Maybach S580 takes it several steps further.

The most significant difference is the wheelbase, which is 18cm longer than even the “Long” version of the standard S-Class.

This extra space is dedicated entirely to the rear passengers, who enjoy “Executive Seats” that can recline like first-class aeroplane chairs, complete with calf massage functions and neck heating.

In terms of pricing, the gap is equally vast.

As of April 2026, a brand-new 2026 Mercedes-Benz S580 4MATIC starts at an MSRP of approximately Sh17 million ($130,700) before options and shipping.

In contrast, the flagship 2026 Mercedes-Maybach S580 commands a starting price of roughly Sh27 million ($207,150).

For a Kenyan buyer, bringing such a behemoth home is no small feat.

After accounting for KRA’s current import duties, excise taxes (which are significantly higher for engines above 3000cc), and VAT, which can effectively double the purchase price, a landed 2021 Maybach S580 is estimated to cost between Sh42 million and Sh48 million, depending on specs.

Clearly, its price tag is commensurate with its status as a gift for “hard work.”
