Nyeri County is the creative hub of the nation as the 64th Kenya National Drama and Film Festival (KNDFF) officially opens, running from April 7 to 15, 2026.

In a major boost for Kenya’s “Orange Economy,” the Kenya Actors Guild (KAG) has partnered with the festival to connect student talent with the professional acting industry.

This year’s theme, “Bold Storytellers, Digital Stages: Driving Kenya’s Development through Theatre and Film,” reflects the growing role of theatre and film in national development.

Thousands of learners from across the country are exploring pressing social issues through plays, narratives, cultural dances, and choral performances, tackling topics from corruption and ethical leadership to gender-based violence and body shaming.

Notable productions include Fesbeth High School’s The 4th Wiseman, which follows a selfless student who chooses honesty over personal gain, ultimately empowering street children with life skills and business opportunities.

Riara Springs Girls High School’s The Golden Key examines systemic exploitation through the lens of slum life, while Precious Blood Riruta’s The Letter Box highlights the effects of parental neglect. Vihiga High School’s Grace in the Gutter explores tensions between traditional schooling and emerging technological passions.

Festival organisers say these productions reflect Kenya’s socio-political landscape while encouraging ethical leadership and societal transformation.

KICD Director Charles Ong’ondo said the festival is “learning away from the classroom, where learners exhibit their strengths, interests and passion,” with performances digitised to preserve cultural heritage.

Albert Barasa, director of play at Aviation College, noted that issues are explored symbolically, “mirroring real-life leadership challenges.”

The KAG partnership adds a career pathway element, offering mentorship, high-stakes competitions, and direct networking with producers and casting directors shaping Kenya’s professional film and theatre industry.

Hosted mainly at Kagumo Teachers Training College, the festival continues to be a premier platform for nurturing talent while addressing national conversations through creative storytelling.
