Pop singer Dua Lipa has sued tech giant Samsung for Sh1.9bn ($15 million), alleging the company used her photo on television packaging without her consent.
According to the BBC, the legal filing states that Samsung used a copyrighted image of the “New Rules” singer on its TV packaging to boost sales, creating the impression that she endorsed the brand.
The lawsuit, filed at the US District Court for the Central District of California, argues that Samsung’s packaging was “designed to improperly capitalise on Ms Lipa’s hard-earned success to promote and sell Samsung’s products.”
The image in question is reportedly titled “Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024,” with the singer named as the copyright holder.
The Grammy Award winner reportedly noticed the image in June 2025 after fans on social media began tagging her and referring to the product as the “Dua Lipa TV Box.”
The lawsuit further claims that her large fan base contributed to increased interest in the televisions, with some consumers reportedly purchasing them because of her image.
An Instagram user was cited as saying they would “get that TV just because Dua is on it.”
Leading up to the filing, the singer’s legal team reportedly warned Samsung multiple times to stop using her image, but the company allegedly failed to comply.
Samsung has not yet responded publicly to the claims.
On social media, reactions have been mixed.
One user, Keith, wrote that while some buyers may not have purchased the TV because of her image, it is still illegal to use someone’s picture without permission.
Another user, Joe Love Lace, commented that she “has a good case.”
