Professor Francis Davis Imbuga has been honoured posthumously as a national hero in the arts category for his decades-long contribution to Kenya’s creative sector.

The honour is included in the National Heroes 2026 publication prepared to mark Mashujaa Day on October 20.

Imbuga, who died on November 18, 2012, was a celebrated Kenyan playwright, actor and literature scholar whose works, including Betrayal in the City and Aminata.

Through his plays, Imbuga explored Kenya’s social, political and cultural realities, examining the tensions between modernity and tradition in African communities. His play Betrayal in the City was Kenya’s entry to FESTAC, the World Festival of Black Arts and Culture.

He was also a teacher, scholar and university administrator. Imbuga taught literature at Kenyatta University, where he served as Dean of the Literature Department, Dean of Arts and Director of Quality Assurance.

Born in 1947, Imbuga belonged to what has been described as the second generation of East African writers, coming of age when the region’s literature was developing its identity. His creative work extended beyond theatre to poetry, narrative, television and film.

He began his career as an actor at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation in 1970 before leaving the institution in 1973. In 1976, he joined the University of Nairobi as a lecturer in the Department of Educational Communication and Technology. He later joined Kenyatta University as a professor of literature.

Imbuga began writing plays in 1969, with Omolo selected as an entry in the Kenya National Schools Drama Festival finals. His other acclaimed works include The Successor and Man of Kafira.

He was a recipient of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences Distinguished Professional Award in Play Writing and an honorary Fellow of the University of Iowa International Writing Programme.

Imbuga died at his home in Nairobi after suffering a stroke.

In honouring him, the National Heroes publication recognises his outstanding contribution to literature, drama and theatre.

Through his writing and work as a playwright, scholar, actor and theatre artist, Imbuga helped shape Kenya’s drama industry and left a body of work that continues to influence readers, performers and scholars.
