Only ten female boxers honoured the National Intermediate Boxing Championships forcing all of them to sail into the finals in Thika yesterday.

The finals are set for this afternoon.

In yesterday’s matches, a number of boxers from former league champions Kenya Prisons sailed into the finals compared with others from other disciplined forces.

They were welterweight Salim Ramadhan, light middleweight Francis Ogeta, light welterweight M. Mohammed and cruiserweight Jeff Ayako.

Both Ramadhan and Ogeta won their matches on the referee stop the contest (RSC) rule.

Ramadhan beat Kesley Kahiru of Nakuru with Ogeta dispatching Sidy Mbata from Homa Bay, both victories coming in the first round as Mohammed defeated Hamed Omar of Mombasa on a unanimous points’ decision.

Ayako also dismissed teammate Richard Sanya on RSC in the first round.

Kenya Prisons head coach Bernard Ngumba said his aim is to have a few of his boxers qualify to play in the National Boxing League.

“With this kind of performance, we have a high chance of more of our boxers making it to the league championships,” said the coach.

In another bout, Emmanuel Okello of Kenya Police knocked out Sonel Onyango of Kwale in the lightweight.

Nakuru Amateur Boxing Club had only one boxer in the finals of the three-day competition.

He was lightweight Richard Bile who beat teammate James Mukuha on RSC in the second round.

A total of eleven teams are taking part in the competition that has attracted 10 female and 105 male boxers.
