Controversial preacher James Ng’ang’a is once again in the spotlight after a video emerged showing him slapping a church member who had dozed off during a service.
In the now-viral clip, Ng’ang’a is seen walking from the pulpit to the front row, where the man is seated.

“Hii Kenya iko na mambo mingi sana, amka!” (“This Kenya has too many problems—wake up!”), he exclaims before striking the man and ordering him to move to the back of the church, visibly upsetting him.

Ng’ang’a then turns to a woman seated beside the man, scolding her for failing to intervene. “Na wewe kwa nini analala hapa na unamwona?” (“And you, why is he sleeping here while you’re just watching?”), he demands.

The video has sparked a wave of outrage online, with many calling on the preacher to issue a public apology.

Nairobi County Chief Environment Officer Geoffrey Mosiria was among those who condemned the incident.

“Even when we respond to noise pollution complaints and find people fighting, we don’t resort to violence. A church is no place to assault someone,” Mosiria said, urging Pastor Ng’ang’a to seek out the man and apologise.

Kenyans online also weighed in on the matter.

Christina Massawe remarked, “Watu wangu wanaangamia kwa kukosa maarifa.” (“My people perish for lack of knowledge.”)

George Wambugu wrote, “This is a complete abuse of human rights. The Nancy Baraza case should be a reference point.”

Sophie Maunde added, “It’s heartbreaking. A church should be a place of refuge—not where you get slapped.”

Pastor Ng’ang’a is no stranger to controversy. Just days ago, he advised his followers against investing in the hospitality and transport sectors, citing personal financial losses.

“I have three matatus, and they are a nightmare. I even sold one for a throwaway price—and it was brand new,” he said. “I don’t know what kind of demon this is.”

He claimed the vehicles have been plagued by strange, unexplained problems, leaving him frustrated with the business.
