Residents of Murang’a have raised concerns over a gang that has been breaking into vehicles and stealing items.

On Monday evening, Nyeri MCA Agnes Wanjiru was shocked after she found Sh1 million she had left in her vehicle was missing and a window broken.

She said she visited Murang’a town in the company of her sister and withdrew Sh990,000 from the bank and kept it in her parked vehicle along the busy street.

“The gang took the amount I had withdrawn from the bank and another Sh10,000 that was in her handbag,” said the tearful Wanjiru.

She said she withdrew the money at 11 am and returned to the vehicle at 4 pm to find the money missing.

“The authorities should work towards the installation of CCTV cameras to assist reduce the crime rate likely to scare the investors,” said Wanjiru.

A hotelier, Mr Muritu Umbia, disclosed that he lost Sh300,000 after the gang broke into his vehicle parked outside his Marmu Hotel.

He said he arrived at the premises from business errands and after 20 minutes returned to the vehicle and found it had been opened.

“Upon scrutiny, I discovered the gang opened the vehicle with a master key,” said Muritu, adding that the incident stopped him from transacting with cash.

Another stationery dealer who declined to be named said he lost his laptop and cash after the thugs broke into his vehicle.

“The area is risky during the day as they patronise the parking bay controlled by the county government,” said the dealer.

Murang’a County Police Commander Benjamin Kimwele said they have launched investigations.

“What happened on Monday is unfortunate, but the matter is under police investigation,” said Kimwele.
