A section of the Orange Democratic Movement party members in Bondo sub-county wants action to be taken against alleged perpetrators of violence in the region.

The members, who have petitioned the ODM’s national office, raised concerns over repeated attacks by suspected goons.

While addressing the media on Monday, the delegates claimed that Bondo constituency has witnessed chaotic scenes, where rival political camps have clashed.

“We are concerned about some politicians eyeing the Bondo parliamentary seat of undermining the party’s democracy, peace and unity through violence,” said Ben Nyamulo, a delegate.

According to Nyamulo, suspected goons attacked and injured several people during the party’s grassroots elections held on April 9.

In their petition, the members accused a section of local politicians of gross violation of Articles 5, 6, and 8 of the ODM party constitution.

“We are therefore appealing to the party’s national office to investigate the conduct of some aspirants and expel them from the party if found guilty,” read the petition.

They also called out the ODM party to come out and condemn the acts of political violence that were witnessed on April 9.

While urging police and political players to arrest the situation, the group also demanded the immediate nullification of the constituency’s grassroots election results.

“We are calling for fresh and transparent elections that uphold democracy, justice and the sovereign will of the people,” continued

Dorine Awiti, ODM’s women leader North Sakwa ward, cried foul over the increasing political intolerance in the constituency.

Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda, who condemned the violence, urged all the political players to exercise peace.

“For a long time, Bondo has been known to be peaceful but it is now worrying with this new trend of political intolerance perpetuated by individuals who want to become MPs.  You can’t fight the people you expect votes from,” said Ochanda.
