Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i made a high-profile return to the public eye on Friday with a grand tour of Kisii and Nyamira counties, drawing massive crowds in a show of political strength and grassroots support.

Thousands of enthusiastic residents packed the streets, waving placards and cheering as Matiang’i’s motorcade snaked through bustling market centers.

Accompanied by local leaders and allies, Matiang’i addressed brief roadside gatherings, thanking the community for their unwavering support and urging them to remain peaceful and hopeful for the future.

The visit has sparked speculation of his possible bid for a higher office, especially as the 2027 general elections slowly draw nearer.  Speculations that he later affirmed after he announced that he is considering being on the ballot in 2027.

“I am ready to be President of Kenya,” Matiang’i declared as the crowd erupted in cheers.

He announced that he would now resign from his World Bank assignment and officially begin his 2027 presidential bid.

“You have asked me to come and serve this country. Do you want me to leave that job and come back to serve you? I will now resign officially, with respect, and come back to Kenya to serve my country,” he said.

The former CS, known for his firm leadership and no-nonsense style during his time in government, was warmly received in the heart of Gusii land, with chants of solidarity echoing through the air.

In Kisii town, jubilant supporters carried posters emblazoned with Matiang’i’s image, alongside messages calling for accountability, unity, and leadership revival.

Vendors paused business, and traders climbed atop their stalls to catch a glimpse of the former powerful minister as he waved to the crowd from the roof of his car.

The tour marked the first major public appearance by Matiang’i since leaving office, and judging by the response in Kisii and Nyamira, his influence in the region remains significant.

Whether it signals a comeback or a strategic move, one thing is clear—Fred Matiang’i still commands attention.
