President William Ruto signing the Persons with Disabilities Bill into law.

Yesterday, President William Ruto signed the Persons with Disabilities Bill into law.

The bill was championed by visually impaired nominated senator and former Sol Generation singer Crystal Asige.

“History in the making: today, my PWD Bill becomes law. We walked this road together, raised our voices, stood our ground, and believed in the possibility of a more inclusive Kenya. This Act carries with it the weight of your stories, your struggles, and your courage. This is your victory,” she said.

President Ruto, during the signing ceremony, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to dismantling systemic barriers.

“We are committed to upholding the dignity and rights of persons with disabilities in our country. By strengthening our legal frameworks, we are ensuring better access to employment, education, and social services.”

Earlier on in the year, Asige was elated once the bill was passed in the senate.

“I am so excited. Congratulations to all of us, not just people with disabilities but basically everybody who has been behind this bill. Now is waiting for the president to sign it into law officially,” she said back then.

The bill aimed to implement Article 54 of the Kenyan Constitution by restructuring the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, defining its functions and powers, and establishing a framework to protect, promote, and monitor the rights of persons with disabilities.

Taking to the X it was signed into law Crystal said;

“Passing the Persons with Disabilities Act 2025 was just step one – now, the real work begins.”

She further challenged the proper institutions to ensure the Act comes to life in every corner of Kenya.

“We didn’t fight for this just to celebrate a title. We fought so that Kenya can become a little fairer, a little more kind, and a whole lot more inclusive.”
