The Turkana Professionals Association (TPA) has hit back at what they call political bias and unfair judgment following the nomination of Hon. Erastus Edung Ethekon to head the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

In a bold statement released on Monday, May 12, 2025, the group called out some national leaders—especially Martha Karua—for making remarks that question Ethekon’s qualifications, arguing that such comments are rooted in outdated stereotypes about the Turkana region.

“Turkana is not a bush—it’s the Cradle of Mankind,” said TPA Chairman Jackson Nakusa. “This place is full of brilliant minds and capable leaders. Erastus is living proof of that.”

Ethekon is no stranger to leadership. He’s a well-respected governance and legal expert with a law degree from the University of Nairobi, plus a Master’s in Public Policy and an MBA in strategic leadership.

He’s led major reform efforts, managed multi-million-shilling projects, and advised on big national and international policy issues.

But despite all that, the association says some people are still choosing to judge him based on where he comes from rather than what he’s achieved.

“It’s frustrating,” said Nakusa. “This kind of political profiling doesn’t just hurt individuals—it shuts the door on entire communities that have long been left out. It’s not just about Erastus. It’s about giving every Kenyan a fair shot, no matter where they’re from.”

TPA is now calling on leaders and the public to rise above ethnic and regional bias and to support a merit-based approach when it comes to national appointments.
