Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Githunguri MP, Gathoni Wamuchomba/HANDOUT

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Githunguri
MP, Gathoni Wamuchomba, met on Wednesday, even as the push to unite the opposition
intensifies.

The meeting also included former Kitui Governor Charity
Ngilu, who was part of the Azimio coalition and has kept a low profile since
the side lost the 2022 presidential election.

In a post after meeting the two leaders, Wamuchomba stated:

“Consultations on going ……Wantam (One term) is inevitable.”

The Githunguri MP, despite being elected on the ruling party,
the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), has become a great critic of the Kenya
Kwanza administration.

She has previously shown support for former Deputy
President Rigathi Gachagua.

Matiang’i, on the other hand, has been working with the
Opposition leader, including Kalonzo Musyoka and Rigathi Gachagua, among others.

The former Interior CS, Gachagua, Kalonzo, Martha Karua and
Eugene Wamalwa, among others, have held at least two public meetings and one
where they all attended the wedding of Kalonzo’s son Kevin Muasya.

Matiang’i has also been reaching out to leaders from other
communities as he consolidates support ahead of the 2027 presidential
elections.

Addressing a rally at Gusii Stadium on May 2, 2025,
Matiang’i announced that he had finally decided to pursue the country’s top
seat following numerous requests from Kenyans.

“I am ready to be President of Kenya,” Matiang’i declared as
the crowd erupted in cheers.

He announced that he would now resign from his World Bank
assignment and officially begin his 2027 presidential bid.

“You have asked me to come and serve this country. Do you
want me to leave that job and come back to serve you? I will now resign
officially, with respect, and come back to Kenya to serve my country,” he said.

In an interview on Monday on Egesa FM, Gachagua said that
former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is qualified to lead Kenya.

He said the former CS has a solid service and delivery track
record, having held key positions in the ministries of Interior, Education, and
ICT during retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.
