Police lob teargas to disperse Kenyans protesting against the death of Albert Ojwang in Nairobi CBD on June 12, 2025/CYRUS OMBATI

Police lobbed tear gas canisters at a group of protesters in the city centre.

The group was protesting the killing of Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody on Sunday morning.

The group was dispersed by anti-riot police who were waiting outside the National Police Service headquarters, Jogoo House.

Police said they could not allow them beyond there and to Harambee Avenue, where they planned to camp, as Treasury CS John Mbadi planned to read his budget.

The group dispersed and escaped towards Moi Avenue.

Youth and activists have come out to protest as they demand justice for the death of Ojwang.

There was a contingent of police as they prevented protestors from accessing Parliament Road.

Protesters came bearing flags and placards.

They sang the national anthem as they demanded the resignation of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat.

Human rights activist Hussein Khalid led the young people in demanding justice.

“No justice, no budget, “protesters chanted.

The peaceful protesters did not get tired of chanting, even with teargas being lobbed at them.

“You cannot kill us and lead us, “one of the placards read.

The protest started with just a small number, but the crowd continued growing as people came from different places.
