The Ministry of Water and Environment has received a
significant financial injection under the 2025/26 national budget.

Treasury CS John Mbadi has allocated Sh103.5 billion to the water and environment sector.

In the 2024-2025 Budget, the government allocated Sh97.7
billion to the water and environment sector.

The funds are spread across key subsectors aimed at
improving water access, sanitation, and environmental conservation in line with
the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

Mbadi allocated Sh10.7 billion for Forest Resources
Conservation and Management, Sh1.6 billion for Forests Research and
Development, Sh3.7 billion for Environment Management and Protection, and Sh11.5 billion for the Kenya Financing Locally Led Climate Action Project.

Others are Sh1.6 billion for Meteorological Service, Sh13.2 billion for wildlife security, conservation and management, Sh953 million
for wildlife research and development, Sh1.1 billion for Human Wildlife
Conflict Compensation and Sh950 million for Wildlife Insurance.

The government proposed an allocation of Sh26.8 billion for water and
sewerage infrastructure development, Sh16.5 billion for water resources
management, and Sh1.9 billion for water storage and flood control.

He further proposed Sh15.0 billion for irrigation and land
reclamation and Sh266 million for water harvesting and storage for irrigation.

CS Mbadi emphasised that the allocations are not only meant
to address water scarcity and environmental degradation but also to create jobs
through the Climate WorX initiative, which employs youth in ecosystem
restoration activities.

The 2025/26 allocations reflect the government’s continued
prioritisation of water and environmental sustainability as critical enablers
of equitable economic growth and improved livelihoods.

The theme for this
year’s Budget is “Stimulating Sustainable
Economic Recovery for Improved Livelihoods, Job Creation, Business and
Industrial Prosperity in line with BETA”

While addressing Parliament, CS
Mbadi said the country has experienced a wide range of challenges in the past
two years in navigating trying times.

He said Kenyans have demonstrated
exceptional resilience and remained steadfast in the development and democratic
journey.

“Under the leadership of President
Ruto, we have made meaningful progress in advancing our development agenda,
promoting inclusion, fostering national unity, and working together to build
our nation and renew the spirit of patriotism.
