The cast and crew of the film ‘Kipkemboi’ pose for a group photo after a screening at the Michael Joseph Centre, located at Safaricom HQ.

A Kenyan-Canadian film that tells the story of a village genius whose algorithm attracts powerful forces has been making waves on the international film circuit.

This has seen it earning critical acclaim at prestigious awards ceremonies and showcasing Kenya’s storytelling potential to global audiences.

Shot across both Canada and Kenya, the film tells a story of Kipkemboi, a young mathematical genius from rural Kenya.

After his father’s death, Kipkemboi forgoes a scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to support his family. Inspired by a book on stock trading given to him by his

girlfriend, Chipchirchir, he develops an algorithm that successfully manipulates the stock market, bringing wealth to his community.

However, his actions attract the attention of international financiers and local authorities, leading to his arrest on suspicion of terrorism.

The international co-production brings together an impressive ensemble cast that spans continents. Canadian actors David Cubitt, Kevin Hanchard, and Vinessa Antoine star alongside Kenyan talent including Abel Mutua and Chichi Seii, with Thamela Mpumlwana also featured in the cast.

Behind the camera, the film boasts equally impressive credentials. Written by Joel Richardson, produced through a collaboration between Canada’s Jennifer Jonas and Leonard Farlinger, working alongside Kenya’s Appie Matere.

The project is directed award-winning Nigerian filmmaker Charles Uwagbai.

Since its official release, the film has already garnered significant recognition on the international stage as it was honored at the 2024 African Film For Impact Festival (AFFIF), recognized at the 2024 Directors Guild of Canada Awards, and celebrated at the 20th Africa Movie Academy Awards.

At the 20th Africa Movie Academy Awards, Elsie Chidera Abang won Best Actress in a  Supporting Role for her portrayal of Chipchirchir.

The film received nominations in several other categories, including Best Film by an African Living Abroad, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Production Design, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects.

The project has so far received support from various industry stakeholders, including telecommunications company Safaricom, which hosted an exclusive red-carpet premiere that brought together cast, crew, and creative industry professionals.

“As a company deeply rooted in Kenya’s culture, we are proud to support a film that exemplifies the richness and global potential of local storytelling. Through this sponsorship, we aim to shine a spotlight on Kenya’s creative potential and inspire more storytellers,” said Fawzia Ali, Chief Consumer Business Officer, Safaricom PLC during the premiere.

“This is more than a film premiere, it is a celebration of positive and authentic Kenyan stories, talent, and the future of local entertainment,” said Mbugua Njihia, Director Symbiotic Media.
