Gospel singer Karangu Wa Muraya has faced criticism after appealing for financial assistance on behalf of a grieving family.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Karangu asked for support to help clear a hospital bill that has left the body of his close friend, Sam, lying in a mortuary for over a month.

According to Karangu, the delay in burying Sam, who hails from Gatanga, is due to an outstanding KSh 270,000 hospital bill at Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital.

He explained that although the Social Health Insurance (SHA) had already settled KSh 300,000, the hospital would not release the body until the balance is cleared.

“I am feeling so shameful that the body of my friend Sam is still lying in the morgue simply because of a KSh 270,000 hospital bill,” he wrote, expressing his heartbreak and embarrassment.

The singer, who is also a well-known philanthropist and SHA ambassador, pleaded with fans, followers, and well-wishers to rally together and help the family give Sam a dignified send-off.

He shared a mobile number for contributions and accompanied the post with a photo of himself alongside another man, believed to be the late Sam.

However, instead of rallying sympathy, the post sparked a wave of online backlash, with many netizens questioning why Karangu, who is known for mingling with high-ranking officials and showcasing wealth online, was turning to the public for help.

Fraciah Mwangi queried, “You said SHA cleared your brother’s bill, why hasn’t it cleared this one? Your wife said you’re rich!”

Empress Kemunto added, “You’re SHA’s ambassador. You could get this waived or even have Kindiki make one call. Your wife said you can buy Nairobi!”

Purity Ogega chimed in, “You just bought your wife a car. You can clear this bill yourself.”

Anne Waiharo asked bluntly, “How can you ask us for money when you dine with kings?”

After the online bashing, nominated MP Sabina Chege cleared the outstanding bill, allowing the family to finally begin burial arrangements for their loved one..

The criticism comes just days after Karangu was heckled and chased away by locals, angered by his recent visit to State House, a move that appears to have soured his reputation among sections of his fanbase and local community.

With the backlash intensifying, many have accused the singer of exploiting the deceased’s image for public sympathy and questioned his sincerity in the fundraiser.
