Rapper and activist Juliani has called on Gen Z protestors to prioritise safety and solidarity ahead of the June 25th demos.
In a message that is already gaining traction online, the Bahasha ya Ocampo hitmaker took to X (formerly Twitter) to His message was simple, yet loaded with street wisdom:
“For June 25th, tafuta mbogi yako ya mtu 10 au zaidi. Mtoke mtaa pamoja, back up each other kwa street na mrudi mtaani pamoja!”
Translated, Juliani is calling on demonstrators to move in small, trusted groups, what he refers to as a “mbogi” to protect one another before, during, and after the protests.
His call comes amid heightened tension and growing anticipation for the memorial protests, which aim to honor the lives lost during last year’s deadly demos.
In July 2023, widespread protests over the Finance Bill and issues of governance saw a brutal police crackdown, with over 60 reported deaths and hundreds more injured.
Many of those lost were young people, which galvanised the Gen Z-led movement that continues to shake Kenya’s streets and online spaces alike.
