Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has dismissed criticism surrounding his squad selection for the upcoming 2024 CHAN tournament, saying Kenya is not just showing up to participate but to make a mark.

The delayed continental showpiece is set to kick off on August 2, 2025.

Speaking during a media briefing at Kasarani Stadium on Thursday, July 10, McCarthy stood by his team, defending the omission of some high-profile names from the FKF Premier League. The team officially commenced their residential training camp on Thursday.

“We know everyone is not going to be happy with how the team is selected, but everyone has not been where I’ve been,” McCarthy said.

“We’re not just here to participate, we’re here to make a statement.

The South African tactician, appointed earlier this year, has faced mounting pressure from fans and former players over perceived favouritism and the exclusion of certain local stars who have impressed during the season.

However, McCarthy maintained that his choices were guided by performance in camp, not hype.

“I’ve worked with these boys. I’ve seen them, I’ve coached them, and I know what they bring to the table,” he explained.

“When it comes to World Cup qualifiers and international windows, more players become available. But this is a local-based squad, you have to work with what you’ve seen, not just what you hear.”

Critics on social media and within football commentary circles have accused the coach of sidelining in-form players in favour of familiar faces. But McCarthy appeared unfazed.

“Do you risk taking someone based on a couple of good games, or go with what you’ve seen week in and week out in camp?” he posed.

“Everyone has not been where I’ve been. I know talent when I see it.”

He added that his technical bench was in full agreement with the final list and that the goal remains unchanged, to bring success to the national side.

“I’m here to bring success to this country,” he concluded.
