Netizens have been left stunned after a video surfaced showing a Nairobi matatu, popularly referred to as a nganya, being driven recklessly around a city roundabout.
The viral clip captures the loud, graffiti-covered minibus speeding and hooting as it dangerously swerves around the City Hall roundabout, putting passengers at serious risk.
Surprisingly, the passengers on board appeared to be enjoying the wild ride. Some were seen chanting, leaning out of the windows, and waving excitedly.
Others clung to the sides of the vehicle, some even hanging from the door, as the matatu tilted during its reckless maneuvers.
The matatu was fully decked out in graffiti art, including across its windscreen, with a bold message on the rear that read: “Keep it iconic.”
The video has since sparked heated reactions online.
@BennonMaina said, “I’d love to see that repeated 5 times between 2nd & 3rd gear.”
@NaiBlogger added, “Huwezi elewa Nganya culture.”
@AntonyKungu9 defended the matatu, “Nganyas have been doing this since time immemorial.”
@3_amNoon backed, “A nganya is a work of art buana, the hate they receive is unnecessary.”
The video has reignited debate over Nairobi’s nganya culture, known for celebrating matatus adorned with bold graffiti, flashing lights, and booming sound systems.
While the vibrant matatu tradition is often praised for its creativity and urban flair, safety concerns continue to mount.
One such case was that of the ‘Uppercut’ matatu that crashed in Nyeri in May, injuring 22; with 18 sustaining minor injuries and leaving four in critical condition.
Later that day, videos would then emerge on social media showing the ‘Uppercut’ matatu being driven recklessly along Thika Road, just hours before it was involved in the crash.
In the viral footage, the matatu could be seen swaying between lanes on the busy highway, with young men hanging off the left side and others leaning out of the windows, in a show of sheer ignorance.
However, this case is not unique.
Several other matatus have previously been caught on video engaging in reckless stunts, with passengers dangerously hanging off the sides, sparking fears over the enforcement of road safety regulations in the sector.
