They are not moving away from the scene. Despite the bubblegum moment where Gengetone came and went under and now with Arbantone seemingly on a similar trajectory, the old timers seem to be here for a longer time. They are banking on their classics which received massive airtime.

“What made these songs big is that we had radio and TV only as the means of listening to music. Once your song was accepted in Nairobi, the ripple effect will be felt regionally,” says songstress Nyota Ndogo.

Uganda’s Jose Chameleone has been in Kenya, TZ and recently South Sudan where he has had massive following and his shows are getting filled with fans.

Three titans of the Kenyan music scene Nameless, Wyre and Juacali recently joined forces for a new club anthem titled ‘Visa’, a cheeky nod to the age-old “bro code” excuse for stepping out. Produced by the ever-versatile Motif, the track is a lively fusion of Kapuka, Genge, and Dancehall, showcasing the distinct flavors of each artist while delivering a seamless, feel-good sound.

More than just a party anthem, ‘Visa’ taps into a universally relatable theme: the occasional need to take a break from domestic duties to recharge. With tongue firmly in cheek, the trio spin this reality into a humorous and dance-worthy track, layered with infectious hooks and vibrant beats.

The music video offers fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the creative process, capturing the easy camaraderie, playful energy, and undeniable chemistry among these industry legends. It is a celebration of brotherhood, good vibes, and the timeless power of a solid excuse.

Award winning spinmaster, DJ Lyta applauds the collaboration, saying it reflects the enduring appeal and staying power of seasoned artists in a constantly shifting music landscape.

According to him, the industry has seen waves of fast-rising trends like Gengetone and, more recently, Arbantone that take the youth by storm but often struggle with longevity due to their heavy reliance on shock value, repetitive content, or internet virality rather than strong musical foundations.

“Trends come and go,” DJ Lyta explains. “Gengetone exploded onto the scene with raw energy and street appeal, and Arbantone brought a new bounce and urban vibe but both are already showing signs of fatigue. What keeps artistes like Nameless, Wyre and Juacali relevant isn’t just their legacy; it’s their ability to evolve with the times while staying true to their roots.”

DJ Lyta says that while younger artistes often chase what is hot in the moment, veterans tend to draw from life experience, musical knowledge and deep industry insight. This makes their work not only relatable but also sustainable in the long run.

He encourages younger artistes to study the veterans not just for their music but for their consistency, versatility, and professionalism.

“Trends can make you famous, but it’s the foundation that makes you last. That’s what these guys have—and why they’re still shaping the sound of Kenyan music today.”

Publicist and A&R Manager Gloria Adiambo, who has worked with both emerging and established acts, believes ‘Visa’ is a timely reminder of the value veterans bring to the industry.

“There’s a reason these names still hold weight,” she says. “Beyond the music, they’ve mastered the business, built strong brands, and understand how to deliver quality consistently. Young artistes can learn a lot from their discipline and how they navigate challenges without burning out or fading away.”

She adds that bridging the gap between new talent and seasoned artistes is something the industry should actively foster through collaborations, mentorship, and joint platforms like Afro Carnival.

“This isn’t just about nostalgia. It’s about legacy meeting innovation and that’s where real cultural growth happens.”

This message of cultural continuity is echoed at the Afro Carnival Beach Experience, a vibrant coastal festival that blends Afrobeat rhythms, fashion, dance, and art with a strong message of unity and cultural exchange.

Positioned as a “full-on cultural takeover,” the Afro Carnival serves not only as a creative playground for Gen Z and millennials, but also as a bridge between generations of African artistry.

“Events like Afro Carnival give space for legends and emerging stars to share the same stage, the same crowd, and the same cultural moment. It’s not just about music—it’s about passing on the torch, learning from each other, and showing young creatives that tradition and innovation can dance together,” says events host and media personality Giriman.

Colonel Mustafa, himself a veteran with deep roots in the Kenyan music industry, also weighs in, underscoring the importance of learning from the veterans not just about musical, but professionalism as well.
