President Ruto cheers during the Kenya vs Zambia match at Moi Sports Centre Kasarani [PCS]

Kenyans are still in celebration mode after Harambee Stars’ thrilling 1-0 victory over Zambia at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

But while the national team’s performance stole the show, it was President William Ruto’s footwear that lit up social media.

Sharp-eyed fans spotted the Head of State cheering on the Stars in a pair of Ferragamo Gancini suede low-top sneakers — luxury kicks retailing at around $980 (about Sh126,000).

The Ferragamo low-top with the signature Gancini ornament blends a sporty, modern silhouette with the brand’s timeless elegance.

On its official website, the brand describes the shoe as: “an urban sneaker with a bold mix of fabrics: technical mesh, suede, and smooth leather come together for an original, high-end look. The side Gancini, the padded collar and tongue, and a bold ultra-light rubber sole complete the design.”

Crafted from premium calfskin leather and finished with meticulous detailing, the sneakers strike a balance between high-end Italian craftsmanship and laid-back streetwear — the kind of piece that elevates even the most casual outfit.

As images of Ruto in the designer sneakers made the rounds online, Kenyans had plenty to say.

Some praised his sense of style and the confidence to rock luxury footwear at a national match, while others cheekily wondered if the pricey kicks brought the Stars a little extra luck on the pitch.

One user defended him, posting: “Concentrate on our players, wachana na boss yeye ni 2.5m tu.”

Of course, Ruto is no stranger to the luxury fashion circuit.

Barely a fortnight ago, he stepped out at the Maasai Mara rocking a rare antique Rolex Daytona worth over Sh6 million.

Clad in classic jungle green game wear and boots, the look was punctuated by the statement timepiece — long synonymous with wealth and refined taste.

While Rolex does not publish retail prices, luxury platforms such as Chrono24 list Daytonas at around $50,000 (Sh6.4 million) for a new piece, and from $20,000 (Sh2.5 million) for pre-owned models.

And in 2024, during a service at the Priesthood Fellowship Church in Kahawa West, Nairobi, he was photographed wearing a Sh425,000 Stefano Ricci crocodile belt; another addition to his growing catalogue of head-turning luxury fashion.
