Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has dismissed attempts by President William Ruto to use clergy and political leaders from Ukambani to persuade him to join the government.
Speaking on Saturday during a pastors’ ordination at Calvary Christian Tabernacle Church in Mutituni, Machakos County, Kalonzo said such efforts were futile, insisting he remains firmly in the opposition.
“Don’t fall into that trap of William Ruto using senior bishops from this region. Go to the State House, sit with him and be sent to convince Kalonzo Musyoka to join him. They shouldn’t waste their time,” he said.
Kalonzo, who was accompanied by Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa, Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, former Attorney General Justin Muturi, and hosted by Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, maintained that his mission is to unseat Ruto in the next general election.
The Wiper leader also criticised the cancelling of the High Grand Falls Dam project, which was meant to benefit residents of Tharaka Nithi and Kitui counties.
He further warned church leaders against being “captured” by the state, cautioning them to protect the respect of their congregations and the community at large.
“They have sent some church leaders to talk with us—including me, even though I don’t hold an elective seat—claiming that we have rejected his development projects. So, he has sent bishops,” Kalonzo said.
The former vice president stressed that development is a constitutional right, not a privilege to be negotiated.
“The Kamba community knows that the right to development is a constitutional right. Nobody should be begging for it. Nobody can reject development because the constitution is clear—there must be equal development without discrimination,” he added.
“Roman Catholic bishops refused those gifts. It is public money. We aren’t going to give you Prados. We will give you what we have,” he said.
He called on church leaders to remain true to their mission, noting that the community is alert to political manoeuvres.
“This isn’t a joke anymore. We will call you out. The church must remain a voice of integrity,” he said.
