Azziad Nasenya took to social media to share the news that Prefects, a Kenyan teen drama she featured in, has been nominated for the 2025 International Emmy Awards.

The “Utawezana” breakout star, who plays Miss Kemi, a mathematics teacher in the series, posted a video brimming with excitement.

“I have some good news. Tell me why the series I was on last year, called Prefects, if you were watching Prefects on Citizen TV or NTV Uganda, our series has been recognised. We have been nominated for the Emmy Awards. We have been recognised. We have been nominated. If you have not watched Prefects, make sure you do something about it,” Azziad said in the clip.

She went on to congratulate her colleagues, “To the team that I worked with, the writers, fellow cast members, producers, and those who sponsored the show—that is such a beautiful thing and yeah, we are grateful to God.”

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences confirmed that Prefects is nominated in the Kids: Live-Action category, a major nod for Kenyan and Ugandan television.

The show premiered in 2024 and quickly built a following across East Africa.

Set in Mvule High School, the drama explores power, oppression, and resistance.

It tells the story of prefects who enforce harsh and unfair rules, until a student movement known as “The Clippers” rises to challenge both the prefects’ union and the school’s authoritarian deputy principal.

News of the nomination sparked an outpouring of congratulatory messages online, though some Kenyans could not resist poking fun at Azziad over her recent troubles.

Just last week, speculation swirled online that her Kileleshwa apartment was being auctioned over an alleged mortgage default.

Azziad, who has previously faced debt-related rumors, chose humor over confrontation.

“If there is one thing I do and respect is my online fans… I have been seeing this evening on my posts and DMs of people asking me for ‘tea’, and guess what, we are going to make one,” she quipped in a viral video, before giving fans a playful recipe for flavored tea instead.
