Nairobi’s art lovers are in for a rare treat as world-renowned Swiss choreographer Joshua Monten makes his East African debut with his celebrated production Linearity.

The four-day performance series will run from today October 28 to November 1, offering Nairobi audiences a fresh encounter with contemporary dance.

Performances will take place at Artzone Studios, the Kenya National Theatre, Alliance Française, and even spill into the city streets with a free outdoor show at Hilton Square in Nairobi’s Central Business District on October 31.

Monten’s Linearity explores the tension between structure and freedom.

The choreography draws audiences into a meditative rhythm, balancing technical discipline with bursts of spontaneity.

“It’s about finding play in precision,” Monten once said of his work, which has toured across Europe, Asia, and North America, earning acclaim for its wit, accessibility, and emotional depth.

The performance will feature Monten alongside long-time collaborator Jack Wignall, who together will also conduct closed-door workshops with Kenyan dancers.

Born near New York City, Monten’s path to dance was unconventional. Trained first in literature and cultural anthropology, he only discovered his love for movement at 20.

His career later took him to the Bern Ballett and Stadttheater Heidelberg, where he worked with world-class choreographers like Hofesh Shechter and Tino Sehgal.

Since founding the Joshua Monten Dance Company in 2012, his performances have graced stages from the Sydney Opera House to Théâtre de la Ville Paris, reaching audiences across continents.

The Nairobi stop represents both a homecoming to Africa and a leap forward for Kenya’s dance scene.
