Rihanna joins world in celebrating Barbados’ 59 years of independence with heartfelt message

Rihanna led global tributes as Barbados marked 59 years of independence and four years since becoming a republic, using her platform to celebrate her homeland and amplify the island’s milestone to millions worldwide.

Sharing nostalgic images of sugarcane fields, local dishes and the island’s famous white-sand beaches, the Grammy-winning artist posted on Instagram.

“Congratulations to Barbados, MY HOME, on our 59th year of Independence and our 4th year as a Republic! Today also marks the installation of our 2nd President, His Excellency Lieutenant Colonel The Most Honourable Jeffrey Bostic, who, alongside our Honorable Prime Minister Mia Mottley will continue to lead Barbados with excellence!”

Her message drew thousands of reactions from fans and Barbadians around the world, cementing her role as the island’s most influential cultural ambassador.

“Barbados just keeps leveling up. Independence, Republic status, a new President — all led with unity and purpose. This is what national pride looks like,” one user wrote.

“There’s a flower called Pride of Barbados in Nigeria. Every time I see the flower, it reminds me of Rihanna” another wrote.

Barbados this week marked its national milestone with parades, cultural festivals, school performances, concerts and community events, as streets were draped in the national colours.

The annual celebrations highlighted the country’s resilience, unity and the achievements of a small nation that has long punched above its weight on the global stage.

In recent years, Barbados has increasingly asserted itself as a leading voice for Small Island Developing States, particularly on climate change, global finance and sustainable development, further boosting its international standing.

According to data from the World Bank and IMF, the population of Barbados is estimated to be around 282,580 in 2025.

The nation has a relatively high standard of living, reflected in its Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The nominal GDP for 2024 is estimated to be approximately $7.17 billion USD, with an estimated nominal GDP per capita of over $25,000 USD for 2025.

This economic growth is largely driven by its strong tourism, construction, and business services sectors.
