Pakistan’s Upper House briefly turned into a political farce when a lone donkey wandered into the Senate chamber mid-session, stunning lawmakers and triggering a wave of laughter as security scrambled to escort the intruder out.

The animal ran across the red carpet, paused near the presiding officer’s podium, and appeared wholly unfazed by the chaos it caused.

The spectacle, caught on video and instantly viral, unleashed a storm of satire online.

The chair of the Senate, Yousaf Raza Gillani, reacted reportedly quipping that “even the animals want a say in our laws,” a remark met with applause and laughter.

Online, many people used the incident to satirize the political situation, some called the donkey the “first honest participant” in recent years; others said it was a “welcome improvement” to parliamentary debate given the backdrop of political and economic strain.

According to media reports, the donkey likely gained entry through an unsecured service corridor a lapse that security officials say needs urgent attention.

This isn’t the first time non-human intruders disrupted Pakistani parliamentary proceedings. A similar event with a stray dog had reportedly occurred in 2023.
