Nigerian President Tinubu consoles Anthony Joshua following fatal Lagos accident

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reached out to former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua following a tragic road accident in Ogun State that claimed the lives of two of the boxer’s close associates.

In a statement shared publicly, the Nigerian leader revealed that he personally spoke with Joshua to convey his condolences over the deaths of Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, both members of the boxer’s inner circle who were killed in the crash along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Makun, Ogun State.

“I have spoken with AJ to personally convey my condolences over the passing of his two close associates… I wished him a full and speedy recovery, and prayed with him,” President Tinubu said, adding that Joshua assured him he was receiving the best possible medical care.

The President also disclosed that he reached out to Joshua’s mother, offering prayers and words of comfort during what he described as a deeply painful moment for the family.

“I also spoke with his mother and prayed for her. She was deeply appreciative of the call,” the statement read.

According to Tinubu, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun was present at the hospital where Joshua was receiving treatment and had given assurances that everything possible was being done to ensure the boxer’s well-being.

Governor Abiodun “assured me he will do everything possible to ensure AJ receives the best attention,” the President noted.

The accident involved a Lexus SUV that reportedly lost control while overtaking and crashed into a stationary truck by the roadside.

Preliminary findings by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) suggest the vehicle may have been travelling above the legally prescribed speed limit.

Joshua, who was seated in the back seat, sustained minor injuries and is said to be in stable condition.

The two men who died were seated in the front of the vehicle.

Kevin Latif Ayodele was Joshua’s personal trainer, while Sina Ghami served as his strength and conditioning coach, having recently helped prepare him for his Jake Paul bout two weeks ago.

President Tinubu concluded his message with prayers for the bereaved families.

“May God strengthen the families and grant repose to the souls of the departed,” he said.
