Beloved actor Isiah Whitlock Jr. has passed away at the age of 71.
According to his manager, Brian Liebman, Whitlock passed away peacefully on December 30, 2025, in New York City after a brief illness.
Liebman shared on Instagram, “It is with tremendous sadness that I share the passing of my dear friend and client Isiah Whitlock Jr. If you knew him, you loved him. A brilliant actor and even better person. May his memory forever be a blessing.”
Born on September 13, 1954, in South Bend, Indiana, Whitlock spent over four decades captivating audiences with his deep voice, commanding presence, and uncanny ability to steal any scene, on stage, television, or film.

Whitlock is perhaps best remembered as the corrupt politician Clay Davis on HBO’s The Wire, a role that became iconic thanks to his unforgettable delivery of “sheeeeeeeee-it.”
He later showcased his comedic talent on HBO’s Veep, portraying Secretary of Defense George Maddox for three seasons, winning over a new generation of fans.
His career extended far beyond television.
Whitlock frequently collaborated with director Spike Lee, appearing in films such as Da 5 Bloods, 25th Hour, and BlacKkKlansman.
He could also be seen in classics like Goodfellas and more recent hits like Enchanted and Cocaine Bear. Truly, his presence graced screens everywhere.
